Competitive sports sit at the intersection of several fields of law: contract law, employment law, and, at times, the internal, sport-specific rules set by sports bodies. Understanding how these fields interact matters both for athletes and coaches and for clubs and sports organizations themselves.

Employment agreements in professional sports often differ from a standard employment contract: they may include clauses on transfers between clubs, national-team participation, sponsorships and commercial rights, alongside provisions on the term of the engagement and the circumstances of its termination. Careful review of these clauses, both when drafting an agreement and before signing one, can prevent significant disputes later on.
